Kanye used the “808” sound and altered its pitch to create the unique distorted and electronic sound you hear throughout the album. The album is heavily influenced by 1980s synthpop and electropop. The type of ideas that it was coming up with, the melodies that were in me - what was in me I couldn’t stop. Emotionally drained and feeling somewhat lost, Kanye dealt with his pain by channeling it into a sonically stripped-down album, one dominated by his use of the titular Roland TR-808 drum machine and Auto-Tune. The album was formed off the back of an extremely difficult time for West his mother died due to complications after cosmetic surgery, his relationship with on-and-off again girlfriend/fiancé Alexis Phifer finally ended for good, and Kanye was struggling to adapt to his celebrity status, often being criticized from the media.

This album shows the raw, vulnerable side of Kanye.808s & Heartbreak is Kanye West’s fourth studio album, released on November 24th, 2008, and it was a base breaker as far as fans were concerned. West said of the record, "this album was therapeutic – it's lonely at the top." His heavy use of Auto-Tuned vocals would go on to inspire artists like Drake to pick this up and run with it. The album deals with themes of loss, heartache and death. I found the track ‘Amazing’ amusing “I'm amazing (I'm amazing), yeah I'm all that (All that),” classic Kanye again. The track I was most familiar with on this album was ‘Love Lockdown,’ the first single released. As a general rule, I hate Auto-Tune but for some reason it just works on this record. Instead, West sang through an Auto-Tune processor over sparse beats. Following the death of his mother and the breakup with his fiancée, Alexis Phifer, West released this, an album distinctly lacking in raps. This album, marked by two major events in West’s life, saw his music take a complete change in direction.

This record complicated it even further I actually quite enjoyed it. I’ve mentioned previously the “complicated relationship” that I have with Kanye.
